Coloring your resin is one of the most exciting parts of the creative process. It’s where your personality, style, and vision truly come to life. From soft pastels to bold, dramatic pours, the type of colorant you choose can completely change the look and feel of your finished piece.
If you’ve ever wondered which resin colorant is best, you’re not alone. Let’s break down the most popular options—mica powders, liquid colorants, and pigments—and I’ll share my personal favorite and why it works so well.
The Most Popular Ways to Color Resin
🎨 Mica Powder
If you love vibrant, rich, eye-catching color, mica powder delivers every time.
Mica Powder
Produces bold, vibrant, and shimmery colors
Mixes easily into resin without streaking
A little goes a long way
Perfect for metallic, pearlescent, and marble effects
Holds its color beautifully once cured
Mica powder is especially great for coasters, trays, geode art, and statement pieces where you want the color to truly pop. If I had to choose just one coloring method, mica powder would be it.
💧 Liquid Resin Color
Liquid resin colorants are another popular option, and I do use them—especially when I’m looking for a smooth, translucent finish.
Why artists like liquid colorants:
Easy to control color intensity
Ideal for transparent and layered effects
Blends smoothly without adding texture
Great for ocean art and subtle tones
While liquid coloring works beautifully, I personally find that it doesn’t always provide the same depth and vibrancy that mica powder offers—especially for bold designs.
🧪 Resin Pigments
Pigments are highly concentrated colorants designed to give strong, solid color.
Pigment pros:
Very intense color payoff
Ideal for opaque, solid designs
Long-lasting color stability
Pigments can be powerful, so a small amount is key. Using too much can affect the resin’s cure, so careful measuring is important.
My Personal Preference: Mica Powder Wins
I use both liquid coloring and mica powder, but when it comes to overall results, mica powder is my go-to. The vibrancy, shimmer, and versatility make it hard to beat. It instantly elevates a resin piece and gives it that “wow” factor.
If you’re just starting out, I recommend experimenting with all three types so you can see what works best for your style. But if you want rich color with minimal effort, mica powder is an excellent place to start.
